Natural indigo is a vegetable dye extracted from woad, a biennial cruciferous plant with yellow flowers. Natural indigo is grown for its potential as a blue dye, making it an interesting sustainable alternative to artificial indigo dye.
For this Unikko collection, special natural indigo has been used in combination with unbleached cotton. Natural Indigo Finland grows woad in fields in Nivala, Northern Finland.
It is important to know that products with this natural indigo are slightly more sensitive to direct sunlight. If the product is in direct sunlight, the blue tint may lighten slightly.
The Unikko (poppy) design was born in 1964 after Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, announced that Marimekko would never print a floral pattern. Maija Isola refused to obey Armi's orders and - in protest - created a whole series of beautiful floral prints. One of them was Unikko, which has become a story of creativity, strength, courage and self-confidence.
