Four designers were invited to create an abstract nature-themed pattern using cut-out paper, for an ensemble that options the versatile nature of Marimekko. The Ruudut (squares) print is a collage based on the sketches received from the designers. Design: Erja Hirvi, Maija Louekari, Aino-Maija Metsola, Jenni Tuominen, 2019
The strength of Marimekko lies in, among other things, the possibility to mix the different designs. Because the basic shapes of the service are always the same, this ensures peace and unity and you can go ahead in terms of designs. You do not have to purchase the service in one go. It is nice to keep buying a few items and slowly expanding your tableware collection. Some people choose to have everything in 1 design, some mix it up.
Create your own unique Marimekko tableware collection!
Marimekko designer Sami Ruotsalainen loves to cook. When he designed the new Oiva tableware, he looked for the ideal plate for different dishes, the perfect cup for tea and the best cup for coffee. But he wanted to limit the number of different crockery items and that is why he designed the crockery pieces in such a way that they can be used in different ways and yet are also characteristic of their function.
To determine the correct format, he also looked at classic crockery pieces from his grandmother's time. With all these, he shaped and defined the shape of new Oiva tableware, which is unique and characteristic of Marimekko. Oiva white (off-white) is the basis and the collections in prints on the tableware. With the collections, the pattern / design is, as it were, placed around the Oiva basic service.
