The collection consists of a large collection of organic textiles for the home, including textiles for the kitchen, bathroom, on the road and for meditation. All products are certified with the international organic standard GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). This certification focuses on 2 key areas: environment and social responsibility. This guarantees that all substances are free of toxins and heavy metals and that international labor rights are respected.
The Organic Company GOTS certified
The Organic Company's products are made from 100% organic cotton and from 2010 all products are made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton.
Organic cotton is a natural, renewable and biodegradable fiber. It benefits cotton producers and the environment in developing countries by avoiding the harmful effects of toxic pesticides, and lower production costs improve social conditions. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the world's leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including environmental and social criteria, supported by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.
The aim of the standard is to define globally recognized requirements that guarantee the organic status of textiles, from harvesting the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible production, to labeling to provide a credible guarantee to the end consumer.
Mission of The Organic Company
Joy Vasilyev: ”I see a world out of balance. We have to face the real problems. In addition to climate change, we have spiraled overconsumption, we have wiped out a huge amount of insects and animals, we are leaving polluted soil behind and are taking over more and more pristine land.”
Their mission consists of two parts:
- They want all conventional farming to be organic
- They want to consume less and better in the world.
That's why The Organic Compnay wants to create more awareness around the production of conventional cotton, because conventional cotton production has a very destructive impact on our environment, earning it the title of the world's "dirtiest crop" due to the large number of pesticides and insecticides that are used on it. land is sprayed. About 95% of all cotton production is conventional and/or genetically modified.
Less and Better
The Organic company therefore does not design for the sake of design, but where there is demand for it. As a result, they do not have a mega collection of 1000 articles, but around 100 products. All new products must solve a problem, fulfill a need or improve a category.
The Organic Company operates a "less and better" strategy, which includes good quality and good functionality without fast fashion or seasonal colors, with a focus on promoting alternatives to disposable items. They would like to see this strategy reflected in many more mainstream companies. We must realize that in general many disposable products contain the same amount of raw material as reusable products, making the shift (from disposable to reusable) an essential step towards much better resource management.
The GOTS certified organic cotton production has lower water consumption and less CO2 emissions compared to conventional cotton cultivation.
The Organic Company sees it as their responsibility
- To be 100% organic.
- To make all their packaging from 100% recycled material.
- To make reusable products designed to replace disposables (temporary/disposable items).
- To make functional, quality products that last for years.
- To live up to their design principles: all new products must solve a problem, fulfill a need or cancel a category.

When designing this product, Lone Kjær Rasmussen and Joy Vasilyev did not start the process with colors or fabric; the starting point was to solve a problem. How do you keep towels safely wrapped around you? Lone and Joy designed the looped ribbon to solve this problem. You will also find this feature on many of our other products. (And it is rumored that many awkward situations have been avoided since the introduction of this feature!)
Principle: Meeting a need:
Example: Absorbent kitchen towels.
Let's face it, too many kitchen towels on the market either don't absorb or have poor absorbency and need to be soaked for days before use. Their kitchen towels have a high absorbency and can be used immediately. The kitchen towel was launched in 2009 and was arguably the first kitchen towel that was truly organic and completely absorbent. Today nothing has changed, it is the same size, quality and fabric.
GOTS in detail
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is a worldwide standard for organic fibers that covers the entire textile chain. A GOTS certification means that the requirements for organic textiles are met throughout the supply chain, starting with the farmer and ending with the brand owner.
This whole process must be GOTS certified (not just the supplier) so that the brand can use the GOTS logo on their product tags.
All lots are inspected to a comprehensive standard which, in short, is a very long list of zero tolerances and prohibited inputs. Normally it's not fun to work with strict rules, but as long as the textile industry remains one of the most polluting in the world, we have to work with these strict rules until it becomes commonplace. All GOTS certified factories have annual unannounced inspections.
Normally organic applies to agriculture, but in GOTS it is much more than just agriculture. It's the whole process; farming, harvesting, cleaning, processing, weaving/knitting, dyeing and sewing. The two-pronged GOTS approach covers both environmental and social issues, which apply to the entire supply chain.
