Lapuan Kankurit Raitti wool bedspread 160x260cm coffee dyed orange

The Raitti bedspread by Lapuan Kankurit is made from local Finnish sheep wool, which they collect on local farms within a radius of approximately 400 km of Lapua (where Lapuan Kankurit is based). The bedspread is wonderfully large at 160x260cm and delightfully warm for the cold season.

Extra fun fact > The deep yellow dye is made from surplus coffee from Finnish coffee roasteries.

The bedspread is a light, supple, and warm bedspread. It is not a heavy, thick bedspread, making it perfect to lie under.

Designer Maija Fagerlund found inspiration for the Raitti design in the weave structures of traditional textiles, which she wanted to reinterpret in a modern fabric.

Maija > “Historical and traditional textiles inspire me, and I could spend endless amounts of time studying the materials and structures of textile treasures I find in museums and at flea markets. Raitti originated from the idea of ​​creating an industrially producible version of a traditional weaving technique with the weft threads facing forward, like those seen in Finnish raanu wall hangings and ripsi carpets.”

Lapuan Kankurit - Traceable Natural Materials - Wool

100% wool and pleasant warmth. The weft yarn is made in the EU from high-quality, certified Wool Integrity NZ fibers, while the warp yarn is spun in the EU from certified South American wool fibers. For the best results, the fibers for their wool yarns are sourced from different parts of the world, as the quality and fineness of the wool varies depending on the sheep breeds and their living conditions. All yarns are made from mulesing-free wool.

Wool is known for its excellent insulating properties, keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. The surface structure of wool fibers naturally repels water, making the fabric antibacterial and antimicrobial.

Wool is antistatic, odor-resistant, and stain-resistant, so it doesn't collect dust mites and doesn't need to be washed regularly. Wool is one of the most durable natural materials. Textiles made from these fibers can last for generations, but are also biodegradable—an ecological and sustainable choice.

Lapuan Kankurit – In-house transparent production

The preservation and development of the Finnish textile tradition is important to Lapuan Kankurit. That is why they started collecting local wool from Finnish sheep farms for industrial use. A key driver for the project was that a large portion of the wool was previously lost. They have also rebuilt the production chain, which had disappeared in Finland. Now they control the entire wool production process and focus on unique product development, while passing on their expertise to future generations.

Product design, material procurement, programming and shearing of the looms, as well as the preparatory phases, weaving, and fabric inspection, are carried out in their own weaving mill in Lapua, Finland. If necessary, the sewing is done in the sewing department of their subsidiary in Kaunas, Lithuania, or in their own sewing department in Lapua. The finishing of the product takes place in their finishing plant in Lapua.

Care Instructions

Only wash if the fabric is very dirty. Otherwise, air-dry the fabric outdoors. Hand wash at a maximum of 30°C or dry-clean. If you use washing powder, dissolve it in plenty of water. Immerse the blanket in the water and wash immediately. Squeeze gently. Do not scrub, stretch, or wring. Rinse thoroughly and squeeze out most of the water. Press the blanket between towels until half-dry and let it dry in a well-ventilated area. Do not tumble dry. Iron with a damp cloth, maximum temperature 150°C.

Lapuan Kankurit's strategy is to take responsibility for the entire production process, from yarn to finished product. Therefore, the majority of their collection is made in their own weaving mill in Lapua, Finland. If production there isn't possible, they move to their partially owned factory in Lithuania.
